THE KING'S DECISION

Agasp punctuated the air. Thick silence followed, marked by twitching eyes and stiff torsos.

“Bravian Fire.” Darian’s nervous laugh appeared forced. “How ridiculous. You think we have discovered the legend? It’s nothing more than a child’s myth.”

“I do think so.” Veron’s resolute face held no hint of doubt. “Danik and his men are capable of more than you could imagine. He will take over Norshewa, and there’s nothing you’ll be able to do about it. We’re trying to stop them, for you and all of Terrenor, but we need the Fire. It’s our last hope.”

The king maintained his laughing mien, but Veron’s words appeared to soften his resolve.

Raiyn waited with bated breath, hoping the plea would work. Back in Felting, the idea of claiming the Norshewan throne to procure the Fire seemed simple enough, but standing before the current king made the prospect feel infinitely more foolish.

Desmond leaned toward the king. “Sire.” He nodded toward a quiet corner of the hall. “A word.” The two men retreated with Ryker to the corner and engaged in whispered conversation. Alvin leaned in their direction but didn’t bother to rise.

Veron brought Chelci and Brixton into a circle with Raiyn. “Don’t mention who you are,” he whispered, looking at Raiyn. “If this doesn’t work, say nothing.”

Raiyn frowned. “But how are we—”

“It’s too dangerous. This king and his son are not about to sit back and let you push them off the throne.”

“I agree,” Chelci added. “Maybe we can work through Desmond or Ryker.” She turned to Brixton. “How well do you know them?”

Brixton shrugged. “I hardly know either. We worked together for only a short time, and that was eighteen years ago.”

Veron sighed. “Maybe we can find it on our own. If they’ll at least grant us hospitality to stay in the castle, we can sneak out—”

“Agreed.” King Darian’s voice rang through the hall, cutting Veron off.

Raiyn frowned. He played the word over in his head to make sure he understood its meaning. “You agree?” he asked.

The king nodded. “Desmond reminded me that I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you. My throne, my rule . . . I owe you. The old Norshewa kept to themselves. They did whatever they wanted, regardless of the impact on the rest of Terrenor. Your coming here has reminded me that’s not what I want. We will be different. We will help. Your rumors are true. We have discovered Bravian Fire.”

Raiyn’s eyes grew as he inhaled.

“And if that’s what you require to stop this group, then Norshewa will do its part.”

“What happened to the Fire being a myth?” Veron’s lip pulled up in a grin.

Darian smiled back. “Myths are only myths until they’re proven to be true.” He waved them toward the back door to the hall. “Come with me.” The king led the way, waddling toward the door.

Part of Raiyn felt relief at the Norshewans’ purported willingness to do what they asked, but a nervous tingle ran down his spine.

“Would you permit us to retrieve our weapons?” Veron pointed toward the door where they had entered.
